An assault by suspected armed individuals on Saturday night in Sabon-Layi community, located within the Gwol District of Plateau State's Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, has led to the death of three local vigilante members. The incident, which Vanguard newspaper reported took place around 10 p.m., has further intensified worries regarding the ongoing security challenges faced by residents in the region.

Sources within the community indicated that the assailants entered the area stealthily, using the darkness of night to their advantage, specifically targeting vigilantes performing their duties. Confirming the tragic event, Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders, characterized the murders as a direct affront to the community's collective efforts to safeguard its inhabitants and assets.

Tengwong clarified that the deceased vigilantes belonged to a local security group formed to protect residents from frequent aggressions in the vicinity. He stated, “The attackers came and killed these men who were risking their lives to safeguard the community.” Expressing deep concern, Tengwong deplored the worsening security climate in Barkin Ladi, noting that despite the deployment of security personnel, residents remain gripped by fear. He urged both the Plateau State and Federal Governments to reinforce security measures in the locality through the deployment of more staff to avert future incidents.
