The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a significant clampdown on traffic violations across Nigeria, with 279,414 offenders apprehended between January and May 2026. During this five-month period, the Corps also documented 2,214 road traffic crashes, as revealed in its latest performance report. This robust enforcement drive resulted in the booking of 308,816 traffic offences nationwide.

According to the comprehensive report, the 2,214 recorded crashes involved a total of 4,165 vehicles and impacted 16,349 individuals. Tragically, 1,181 persons lost their lives, while 7,809 sustained various degrees of injuries. Fortunately, 7,359 individuals involved in these incidents emerged unscathed.

Despite the high numbers, the FRSC highlighted these figures represent a substantial improvement compared to the same period in 2025. The Corps noted, "The FRSC has recorded a marked improvement in road safety outcomes across Nigeria between January and May 2026, recording a 25.65 per cent reduction in Road Traffic Crashes and a 25.35 per cent reduction in traffic-related injuries compared to the corresponding period." This positive trend occurred even as the Corps intensified its compliance operations across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, leading to the surge in arrests and offence bookings.

Further details from the report indicate a 25.65 per cent year-on-year reduction in Road Traffic Crashes, a 25.35 per cent decrease in Road Traffic Injuries, and a 22 per cent drop in the overall number of persons affected by crashes.

Beyond its core mandate of traffic enforcement, the FRSC also contributed to national security efforts by recovering 12 stolen vehicles during the review period. These recoveries included eight cars, two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), one tricycle, and one bus.

In terms of vehicle documentation, the Corps successfully produced 470,010 number plates and registered 232,476 vehicles across the country from January to May. This production included 2,598 number plates for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), 39 diplomatic plates, and 73 for military and paramilitary vehicles, all aimed at enhancing vehicle identification and regulatory compliance.

The FRSC also announced it has cleared the backlog of National Driver’s Licence applications, a move intended to streamline service delivery and ensure applicants receive their licences promptly.

Reaffirming its dedication, the Federal Road Safety Corps pledged to continue its efforts to reduce road crashes in Nigeria through consistent enforcement, public education campaigns, improved operational efficiency, and collaborative partnerships with relevant stakeholders. Motorists were strongly advised to adhere to traffic regulations, avoid dangerous driving behaviours, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy to help sustain the positive gains achieved in the first five months of the year.
