The City of Los Angeles is now facing a legal challenge from the owners of Jameson, a pet dog that was tragically shot and killed by a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer last month. The incident occurred during celebrations for the NBA Finals. Marie Marseille and Jeremiah Garcia, Jameson's owners, have initiated a lawsuit, alleging the officer's actions constituted excessive force and negligence.

Court documents obtained by TMZ reveal that Marseille and Garcia contend the use of deadly force against their canine was unwarranted and unreasonable, thereby amounting to an unlawful seizure of their personal property. They are also seeking financial compensation for the negligence involved.

The unfortunate event unfolded after police officers responded to a distress call at Marseille's apartment. Reports indicated screams were heard from the residence, prompting a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Marseille's vocalizations were not cries of distress but rather joyous shouts as she celebrated the New York Knicks' NBA Championship victory.

According to the LAPD's account, their officers had instructed Marseille to maintain control of Jameson. However, the department claims the dog subsequently lunged towards the officers, leading one officer to discharge their firearm.

The shooting incident quickly ignited widespread public outrage, particularly after body camera footage of the event was made public. Following the uproar, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called for a 'thorough and transparent' investigation into the matter. Similarly, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell assured the public that the department would conduct a comprehensive review of the shooting.

The lawsuit filed by Jameson's owners seeks an unspecified sum in damages, which includes both monetary compensation and the reimbursement of legal expenses.
