First Deadly Collision for Tesla Electric Semi Claims Nevada Couple

A devastating three-vehicle accident in Nevada has resulted in the tragic deaths of a married couple, marking what is believed to be the first fatal incident involving Tesla's recently launched electric semi-truck. Local authorities reported that the powerful 10-ton electric semi collided with a vintage Volkswagen Beetle at an intersection along U.S. 50 in Dayton, Nevada, at approximately 7:20 a.m. on June 28. Both occupants of the Volkswagen were pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by the Nevada Highway Patrol and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Forbes indicated.
The victims were later identified through an online fundraising campaign as Sergio and Jennifer Villanueva, residents of Nevada. A poignant message on the fundraiser stated, “No child is ever prepared to lose a parent, especially so suddenly.” It further highlighted, “Sergio is currently attending college in Ohio, and our immediate priority is bringing him home to be with his family during this heartbreaking time,” emphasizing the family's urgent need for support.
Investigations into the precise cause of the collision are ongoing. However, preliminary findings from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office suggest that the driver of the Tesla semi-truck might have fallen asleep while operating the vehicle. The driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, remarkably escaped the wreckage without any injuries. It has not yet been determined whether criminal charges will be filed against them.
In addition to the Volkswagen, a second passenger vehicle was also impacted in the incident. An occupant from this third vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, as reported by the Daily Mail. The grave accident occurred roughly 30 miles northwest of Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada, the manufacturing hub for the semi-truck, which carries a retail price exceeding $250,000, according to Forbes. The electric semi-truck only began regular production earlier this year, and the incident on June 28 is widely considered to be the first fatal crash involving the newest model from the Elon Musk-owned automotive company, the outlet conveyed.
