Marking its 163rd year of existence, the Nigerian Army has once again declared its unwavering dedication to safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and its people. The force promised to continue its relentless efforts against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and various other security challenges plaguing the country. This commitment was articulated by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, in a goodwill address presented on Sunday during the Interdenominational Church Service in Abuja, which officially kicked off the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration activities.

Speaking through Maj. Gen. Maxwell Dangana, Lt. Gen. Oluyede characterized the milestone anniversary as a moment for divine gratitude, introspection on the institution's history, recognition of its successes, and commemoration of personnel who have sacrificed their lives for Nigeria. He stated, “Today provides us with an opportunity to thank God for His mercies, reflect on our journey, celebrate our accomplishments, honour our heroes and renew our commitment to the defence of our dear nation.”

Furthermore, the Army chief highlighted that the celebration served to acknowledge “the sacrifices and dedication of our personnel who continue to serve with courage and professionalism in various operational theatres across the country.” Lt. Gen. Oluyede noted that the chosen theme for this year's commemoration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” perfectly encapsulates the military's constitutional mandate to secure citizens and foster national peace.

He elaborated, “The theme is a clarion call for introspection, renewal and rededication. It reminds us that our primary constitutional mandate is deeply intertwined with the safety, prosperity and trust of the Nigerian citizens we have sworn to protect.” The Army chief affirmed that soldiers are continuously involved in combat operations targeting terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, illicit oil bunkering, and other criminal enterprises disrupting national tranquility.

Oluyede asserted, “Despite the complexity of these security challenges, the Nigerian Army has continued to record notable achievements across the various theatres of operation.” He further stated, “Through the dedication, courage and professionalism of our officers and soldiers, several criminal elements have been neutralised, terrorist enclaves dismantled, hostages rescued and normalcy restored to communities.”

The head of the Army lauded both officers and rank-and-file for their steadfast loyalty, discipline, and dedication to their responsibilities, attributing the force's recent triumphs to effective collaboration with other security organizations and relevant parties. Discussing his leadership vision, Lt. Gen. Oluyede confirmed the Army's ongoing drive to develop “a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force” equipped to tackle modern security threats proficiently.

He explained that this philosophy prioritizes strong leadership, high professionalism, operational efficiency, and the well-being of personnel, encapsulated by the “Soldier First” initiative. “Our personnel remain the Nigerian Army’s most valuable asset. Accordingly, we have continued to prioritise troop welfare by improving accommodation, healthcare services, training opportunities, educational support and other welfare initiatives,” he declared.

Furthermore, Oluyede revealed a substantial surge in new enlistments into the Army, a direct result of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to bolster the nation's security apparatus. He asserted, “This strategic expansion aims to strengthen the Army’s operational capacity and enhance our ability to respond more effectively to contemporary security threats.” He gave assurances that these fresh recruits would undergo “adequately trained, properly equipped and professionally developed” to make significant contributions to Nigeria's security.

The Chief of Army Staff honored military personnel who had died in service, calling their sacrifices an enduring source of motivation. He stated, “We must never forget the gallant officers and soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice in defence of our nation. Their courage, patriotism and selfless service remain a source of inspiration to us all.” He also recognized the essential contributions of injured personnel, military veterans, and their families. He added, “Your unwavering support, patience, understanding and sacrifices constitute a critical pillar of our operational success.”

Lt. Gen. Oluyede conveyed his appreciation to President Tinubu for his consistent backing of the Armed Forces, emphasizing that recent operational achievements would have been unattainable without the President’s endorsement. He remarked, “The successes recorded by the Nigerian Army in recent times would not have been possible without the continued support of the President and the Federal Government.” He implored both military personnel and the general populace to persist in praying for Nigeria's peace, unity, and divine protection, as well as for its armed forces, reiterating the Army’s adherence to its fundamental values of loyalty, discipline, integrity, selfless service, and professionalism.

During a sermon, Brig. Gen. Anthony Maimagani, the Director of Chaplaincy (Roman Catholic) for the Nigerian Army, characterized military service as a sacred vocation dedicated to God, humanity, and the nation, requiring courage, justice, and sacrifice. Maimagani implored all officers and soldiers to respect the dignity of every Nigerian, highlighting that safeguarding innocent citizens is both a constitutional duty and an act of devotion. He exhorted troops to maintain their resolve amidst ongoing security threats, urging them to continue exhibiting bravery, humility, integrity, and compassion in their official capacities. The chaplain concluded by praying for divine protection for the Armed Forces and the country, articulating his aspiration for enduring peace, justice, and unity across Nigeria.
