Husband's DNA Request Linked to Pregnant Wife's Tragic Suicide in India

A 23-year-old pregnant woman in India reportedly ended her life after enduring persistent humiliation from her husband, who allegedly demanded a DNA paternity test for their unborn child. This distressing incident in Hyderabad led to the arrest of the husband and his mother on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
The victim, identified as G Sushmita, was discovered hanging at her home in Gadipeddapur village, located within the Alladurg mandal of Medak district, on the evening of June 25. Alladurg sub-inspector D Shankar confirmed the arrests, stating, “We arrested her husband G Abhilash and his mother Laxmi. They were produced before the magistrate and sent to judicial remand.” Sushmita was five months pregnant at the time of her untimely death.
According to a police complaint filed by Sushmita's mother, G Janabai, her daughter had been subjected to ongoing physical and psychological abuse by her husband. The demand for a DNA test for the unborn baby reportedly escalated her distress significantly. Sushmita, a native of Mothkupally village in Vikarabad district, had been married to Abhilash, a bangle seller from Gadipeddapur, for approximately 18 months.
Janabai recounted a specific incident on June 23, when she and her husband visited Sushmita's house to discuss arrangements for a baby shower ceremony. During this visit, Abhilash allegedly initiated an argument about the ceremony and, in the presence of both families, insisted on a DNA test for the child. Community elders intervened, and Sushmita’s parents subsequently returned home.
The complaint details how this demand, made before both families, caused Sushmita immense humiliation and emotional trauma. Family members further alleged that the suspicion cast upon her character severely impacted her mental well-being. Tragically, two days later, on the evening of June 25, Sushmita committed suicide at her residence. Villagers promptly informed her parents of the devastating news.
Janabai reiterated in her complaint that the relentless harassment from her husband and mother-in-law ultimately drove her daughter to take such a drastic step. Following the complaint, Alladurg police registered a case on June 26. Charges were filed under sections 85 (husband or relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 108 (abetment of suicide), read with section 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. After a post-mortem examination, Sushmita’s body was released to her parents for burial.
