Motunrayo Adeleye, who previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, has expressed strong commendation for the state's judicial system. Her praise follows the recent conviction and imposition of a life sentence on an individual found guilty of raping a minor, a decision she believes underscores the judiciary’s unwavering commitment to justice.

In a statement released on Saturday, Adeleye highlighted that the verdict demonstrates the critical role the judiciary plays in combating gender-based violence, affirming that it restores trust in the justice system for victims and their families. The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency described the court’s decision as “a powerful reminder that the courts remain a secure haven for victims seeking justice.”

She further elaborated, stating, “The judgment provides reassuring evidence that the courts stand as the ultimate refuge for those pursuing redress, serving as a vital cornerstone in safeguarding the most vulnerable members of our society.” Adeleye added that “This ruling also conveys a clear message that survivors of gender-based violence and their relatives should not lose confidence in the legal process. They should remain assured that the state judiciary will continue to ensure that those who violate the law receive appropriate penalties for their offences.”

Adeleye also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of various bodies and professionals instrumental in securing justice for survivors. These included the Ogun State Sexual Assault Referral Centre, healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies, prosecuting attorneys, social workers, and child protection advocates.

Her remarks were made in light of the conviction of Emmanuel Obirija, who was handed a life imprisonment term by the Ogun State High Court sitting in Ijebu-Ode. Justice Catherine Ogunsanya delivered the judgment on June 18, 2026, after establishing Obirija’s guilt in unlawfully engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor. The former commissioner noted that the case was initially reported to the Ogun State Sexual Assault Referral Centre located at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, on December 2, 2022. She lauded all stakeholders involved in the prosecution, emphasizing that their collaborative efforts are crucial in addressing sexual and gender-based violence and ensuring justice for victims.
