The African Action Congress (AAC) governorship hopeful for Oyo State, Daniel Popoola, has expressed strong disapproval regarding the state government's current strategy in addressing security concerns. Popoola asserted that the escalating wave of kidnappings across various parts of the state necessitates immediate, community-led security interventions.

In a statement released on Saturday, Popoola highlighted that residents in Oriire Local Government Area and other affected communities continue to endure a climate of fear. He alleged that abductors are operating with impunity on major roads, farmlands, and remote settlements, despite the government's ongoing efforts to curb the menace. The politician noted that these persistent attacks have severely hampered agricultural activities, restricted the free movement of people, and compelled numerous families to pay substantial ransoms for the release of their abducted loved ones.

"The people of Oriire Local Government Area, and indeed residents across Oyo State, are living in fear. Kidnappers now control our highways, farms and villages. Fathers are abducted before their children. Farmers cannot farm. Traders cannot travel after 6pm. Families sell property to pay ransom. This is survival, not life," Popoola stated emphatically.

He further criticized what he termed the inadequate responses from both the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government concerning the worsening security situation. Popoola insisted that citizens deserve tangible security solutions rather than mere official updates, especially as kidnappings persist in different areas of the state. He reiterated, "Security of life and property is government’s first duty. In Oyo today, that duty has not been met."

Popoola also advocated for a re-evaluation of the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps. He urged the security agency to shift its operational focus more intensely towards forests, rural areas, and farming communities, where criminal activities have seen a significant increase. He proposed the full integration of local hunters and vigilante groups into the state's security framework, citing their invaluable familiarity with the local terrain.

The AAC governorship aspirant pledged that an administration led by his party would prioritize security at the grassroots level. This would involve empowering local vigilante groups, fostering collaborations with traditional hunters, and ensuring the Amotekun Corps reverts to its original mandate. Popoola declared, "No Oyo son or daughter should be kidnapped while politicians sleep safely in Ibadan and Abuja. AAC is different. We will secure every village, farm and road before any other project."

Finally, Popoola outlined his broader vision for Oyo State, which encompasses industrial development, job creation, ensuring food security, and promoting transparent governance. However, he emphasized that such sustainable progress can only be achieved within a secure and safe environment.
