Mechanicville Tragedy: Handwritten Note Points to Grandma in Six Family Deaths

Fresh, disturbing information has come to light concerning the demise of six family members – two women and four children – whose bodies were discovered inside a Mechanicville, New York, apartment. Investigations suggest the cause of death was likely poisoning, with indications of another weapon also being deployed in the horrific incident. Law enforcement officials have verified that a handwritten note was found at the scene, complementing initial autopsy reports that point to a combination of various medications and an unknown implement responsible for “sharp force injuries.”
On Tuesday evening, authorities were called to the residence, where they made the grim discovery of a grandmother, her daughter, and four young grandchildren. The victims have since been identified as Amy Steadman, aged 64; her daughter, Sarah Myers, 44; and Myers' four children: Harper, 13; Hudson, 11; and the 10-year-old twins, Gavin and Gracelynn.
Mechanicville Police Chief Bill Rabbit disclosed that the note found at the crime scene strongly implicates Steadman as a person of interest in the fatalities. Chief Rabbit further explained that formal identification of the bodies only occurred after autopsies were performed on Wednesday, prompted by neighbours' growing worries after not seeing the family for several weeks.
A concerned resident, who alerted the police, reported a strong “smell of death” emanating from the apartment, coupled with an unusual number of flies congregating around the windows and the air conditioning unit. Detectives estimate the victims might have been deceased for as long as 13 days, though the precise moment of death remains unconfirmed.
Initial toxicology and autopsy findings suggest that a combination of both prescription and over-the-counter drugs contributed to what law enforcement has characterized as a deliberate poisoning. During a press briefing, Chief Rabbit also revealed that one of the children sustained “fatal sharp force injuries.”
“Evidence gathered during the inquiry, including a handwritten note and other indirect clues, points significantly to Amy Steadman's involvement in these deaths,” stated Chief Rabbit. He cautioned, however, that “final determinations regarding accountability will be made only after all investigative findings, toxicology results and medical examiner reviews have been completed.”
The father of the children, who was reportedly in a custody battle with Sarah Myers, disclosed that he was scheduled to pick them up and return with them to Utah on June 30, merely days after the tragic discovery. Expressing his grief to The U.S. Sun, he lamented, “No parent wants to outlive their children. It breaks my heart.”
