DSS Clears Nura Idris, Compensates Farmer N3 Million Over False Terror Link

After being held for over a year on baseless accusations, the Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the release of Nura Idris, a farmer from Kaduna. An internal assessment revealed no substantial proof connecting him to Boko Haram militants, effectively clearing his name. This development, as reported by the counter-insurgency news platform Zagazola Makama, came after a dedicated DSS review panel concluded its investigation, finding Idris to be innocent of any terrorist group affiliations.
Sources indicate that the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Ajayi, personally mandated Idris's immediate freedom and authorized a N3 million financial package. This compensation is intended to assist Idris in reconstructing his life. Furthermore, the security agency committed to providing support for the farmer to re-establish his farming operations.
A security official, cited by the publication, revealed that Idris, who practices farming and livestock rearing in Kaduna State's Soba Local Government Area, was initially apprehended in Suleja, Niger State, in June 2024. The arrest was carried out by a different security body based on suspected terrorist connections, after which he was handed over to the DSS. However, the DSS's own exhaustive investigative panel found no credible evidence to support these initial accusations.
Upon receiving his compensation, Idris conveyed his appreciation to the DSS leadership. He was quoted saying, “I thank the DGSS for his kindness. I was well treated in DSS custody and I pray that Allah rewards the DGSS immensely.” His father, Yusuf Idris, echoed this sentiment, commending the DSS Director-General for his perceived empathy and benevolence, assuring that the monetary aid would be judiciously utilized.
Another security insider revealed that the DSS maintains a policy of offering comprehensive assistance to individuals who have been wrongly held. This support encompasses psychological and medical attention, followed by aid in establishing a business of their preference. The source elaborated, “When such cases are recorded, the DSS would usually follow up with the detainee, provide psychological and medical support, after which the agency would further set up any business of the victim’s choice.”
Idris's freedom, the source explained, is part of a broader internal review process launched by the DSS in the previous year. This initiative aims to re-evaluate existing cases and prevent innocent individuals from enduring protracted detentions. The source highlighted, “The setting free and compensations across multiple cases underscores the DSS’s growing reputation for institutional integrity and humanness.” Concluding, the source affirmed that “The service under the current DG has continued to show that safeguarding national security and citizens must go hand in hand with upholding the rights and dignity of citizens.”
