Plateau Command Drags 14 Motorists to Court for Number Plate Infractions

The Plateau State Police Command has brought fourteen motorists before a Jos court following alleged violations concerning vehicle number plates. According to a statement released on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, these actions are part of a statewide enforcement campaign on vehicle registration laws, spearheaded by the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah.
This operation, which aligns with directives from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aims to tackle various security challenges linked to vehicles that are unregistered, have obscured, damaged, or altered number plates, display unauthorized foreign registration, or exhibit other forms of non-compliance that impede vehicle identification and tracking.
So far, the enforcement has led to the impoundment of fourteen vehicles due to these infractions. Their owners or operators have been formally charged in court. The charges include using unregistered vehicles, possessing vehicles with hidden or defaced number plates, unlawfully displaying foreign registration plates, and replacing approved registration plates with manufacturer logos or other unapproved markings.
The police command highlighted that this enforcement serves as a proactive security measure designed to prevent criminal elements from exploiting improperly registered or identifiable vehicles to evade detection. CP Bassey Ewah has instructed officers to uphold professionalism and strictly adhere to legal protocols, emphasizing that the initiative is not meant to harass law-abiding citizens but rather to bolster public safety and deter crime.
Motorists across Plateau State are strongly advised to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and that their number plates remain clearly visible at all times. SP Alabo reiterated the Plateau State Police Command’s dedication to protecting lives and property, expressing gratitude for the community’s support in fostering a safer Plateau.
