Rescue Efforts Hindered in Oyo, Borno as INEC Nullifies Late Primaries

The ongoing rescue operations in Oyo and Borno states have been hindered by challenging terrain and concerns over potential casualties, according to sources familiar with the situation. The abductors are reportedly demanding the release of high-profile terrorist leaders in exchange for the captives, a condition the Federal Government is unwilling to accept. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission has declared that any primary election conducted after the May 30 deadline is invalid, unless a higher court overturns the decision. This move could impact preparations for the 2027 general election. In another development, the Nigeria Democratic Congress has defended its party primaries, denying allegations of irregularities and imposition of candidates. The party's leadership has dismissed these claims, stating that its primaries were conducted fairly. Additionally, federal government debt repayments have exceeded the 2025 amended budget allocation by nearly N2 trillion, according to the Budget Office of the Federation. This significant overrun has raised concerns about the country's debt management. In a separate incident, armed men attacked the Byazhin area of Kubwa, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, killing a vigilante and abducting four residents. The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, with the assailants being heavily armed. Nollywood actor and politician Emeka Ike has also spoken out about the exposure of his personal data at the Independent National Electoral Commission, describing it as an abuse of power and expressing concerns about citizens' safety and data protection.
