In a shocking turn of events, a young woman's life was cut short by her partner just hours after they were seen having fun together on prom night. Ra'Mya Silvan, an 18-year-old recent graduate of Warren Easton Charter High School, was found dead in the 3800 block of Hollygrove Street on Sunday, May 24, with multiple gunshot wounds. The school community has been left heartbroken by her loss, with officials describing her as a bright and talented young woman with a promising future ahead of her. According to the authorities, Daniel Victor Romero, 20, of Slidell, has been booked into jail on a count of second-degree murder in connection with Silvan's death. A video has surfaced showing Romero and Silvan goofing around on prom night, just before the tragic incident occurred. The couple had recently ended a tumultuous relationship, and authorities said Romero had gone to Silvan's house to return her iPad, leading to an argument. A witness reported hearing the victim step outside her house and begin arguing with a male voice, later identified as Romero, before hearing gunshots and the victim screaming. New Orleans police found Silvan unconscious in her driveway, where she died. Several blocks in the Hollygrove area were shut down as police investigated the shooting, with witnesses reporting hearing between 10 and 20 loud pops. Authorities collected 20 spent rifle casings at the scene and identified a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee fleeing the scene as Romero's vehicle. Real Time Crime Camera footage also placed him near Silvan's house minutes before the shooting. Romero was taken into custody on Monday afternoon, May 25, and faces life in prison if found guilty of second-degree murder. The community is still trying to come to terms with the senseless loss of a young life, and the incident has left many questioning the state of relationships and the dangers of domestic violence.
