Anambra Tricycle Rider Gets Death Sentence for Fatal Robbery

A commercial tricycle operator, Makua Ezike, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Anambra State High Court for his role in the murder of Jude Onwuegbuchunam, a native of Umuoji in the Idemili North Local Government Area. The crime occurred on November 17, 2019, along the Oba-Obosi-Nkpor-Umuoji Road, where Ezike and his accomplices, who are still at large, posed as passengers and a tricycle rider in a 'one-chance' robbery operation. The unsuspecting Onwuegbuchunam was picked up and, when he resisted the robbery attempt, was pushed out of the moving tricycle, sustaining fatal injuries near Abidi Hall, Umuoji. The Umuoji Vigilante operatives, who were stationed nearby, chased after the syndicate, leading to Ezike abandoning the tricycle and fleeing. He was arrested the following day when he returned to the scene to retrieve the tricycle and was subsequently handed over to the police, where he confessed to the crime. The prosecution presented five witnesses, including a medical doctor who conducted the post-mortem examination on Onwuegbuchunam, confirming that his death resulted directly from the injuries he sustained. Justice Lauretta Oyeka, who presided over the case, held that the circumstantial evidence was overwhelming, including the abandoned tricycle, Ezike's disappearance from the scene, his voluntary confession, and the medical evidence linking the victim's injuries and death to his actions. The court, therefore, convicted Ezike of murder and sentenced him to death by hanging.
