The Federal Government is actively exploring avenues to bolster businesses in Abia State, with particular attention paid to the vibrant textile and garment industry in Aba and the vital agricultural sector. This disclosure came from John Uwajimogu, the Special Adviser to the President on Industry, Trade and Investment, during his visit to Governor Alex Otti in Abia State on Wednesday.

Uwajimogu articulated that the delegation's purpose in the state was to deepen collaboration with the Abia State Government and identify potential areas for Federal Government projects and investment opportunities. He noted the significant industrial prowess of Aba, especially within its textile and garment sector, and affirmed the Federal Government's commitment to exploring strategies for supporting businesses in this area by addressing key operational challenges.

“One of the biggest things that we see coming out of Abia State is the strong industrial capacity in Aba, particularly in the textile and garments sector,” Uwajimogu stated. He added, “We have been thinking of how, from the federal level, we can support the businesses that are working in that sector and have come up with ideas on how we can address some of the biggest binding constraints that they often face, one being infrastructure and the other one being finance. We are also coming to discuss what we can bring to the table and help resolve and address those binding constraints.”

He further emphasized the Federal Government's keen interest in bringing its various projects and programs to Abia, highlighting that the current visit formed part of broader efforts to pinpoint areas where both federal and state tiers of government could synergize to foster economic development.

In related discussions, Cornelius Adebayo, the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), commended Governor Otti, describing him as a proactive leader and reformer. Adebayo reiterated NALDA’s primary objective: poverty alleviation through agricultural initiatives.

NALDA is currently seeking support from the Abia State Government, specifically for the provision of land for its Renewed Hope Mega Farm Estate program. This ambitious program is designed to consolidate farmers, provide essential infrastructure, enhance security, facilitate access to vital inputs and markets, and ultimately generate sustainable incomes for participants. Adebayo expressed optimism that Abia would become a host for a significant NALDA agricultural project, potentially including a processing facility, and urged Governor Otti to provide suitable land and full support for the endeavor.

Responding to the proposals, Governor Otti affirmed his administration's readiness to collaborate with NALDA and other relevant stakeholders to unlock Abia State’s extensive agricultural potential. He pointed out that despite its relatively limited landmass, Abia possesses highly fertile and arable land suitable for cultivating a diverse range of crops, including cassava, yam, cocoyam, oil palm, and cashew.

Otti concluded by noting that these agricultural initiatives perfectly align with his administration's strategic vision. He stressed that a reliance on food importation places undue strain on the foreign exchange market, underscoring the critical need to revive local production through deliberate and sustained investment in agriculture.
