Dikko Radda Tackles Hunger with 90,000 Bags of Grains in Katsina

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has commenced a significant relief initiative, overseeing the distribution of 90,000 bags of assorted grains to vulnerable households throughout the state's 34 Local Government Areas. This intervention, which was flagged off in Kaita LGA on Wednesday, is intended to alleviate the impact of current economic difficulties and bolster food security.
During the launch, Governor Radda issued a firm directive to all officials and stakeholders involved in the exercise, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the grains reach their intended beneficiaries without any form of discrimination or diversion. He clarified that this intervention is designed to offer immediate support to struggling families, while also complementing his administration’s sustained investments in agriculture and other crucial sectors, all aimed at reducing food insecurity.
“Our philosophy has remained clear: development must reach the grassroots, and the people must feel the presence and impact of government in their communities and daily lives,” Governor Radda stated.
He further elaborated that this latest grain distribution is an integral part of a broader social intervention scheme. He recalled previous government efforts, including support for women engaged in various businesses across the state's 361 wards during the Ramadan period. Additionally, he mentioned an intervention for 7,220 widows statewide, where 20 beneficiaries from each ward received 25kg bags of rice and N10,000 in cash assistance. Governor Radda also acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Aliko Dangote Foundation to the state's food security drive through its rice distribution to vulnerable residents.
According to Radda, lessons learned from earlier distribution exercises have enabled the government to enhance its grassroots delivery mechanism, particularly through the involvement of Community Level Committees. He articulated the refined objective: “The objective is not simply to distribute more, but to distribute better to improve targeting, strengthen accountability and ensure that government support reaches those for whom it is intended.”
However, the Governor stressed that palliative distribution alone cannot offer a permanent solution to food insecurity. He highlighted his administration’s dual strategy of providing immediate relief alongside fostering sustainable economic empowerment. This approach includes providing farmers with subsidized fertilizer and other essential agricultural inputs, as well as expanding irrigation through solar and petrol-powered pumps, tube wells, and other critical interventions.
Radda explained the rationale behind these agricultural investments, stating, “These investments are deliberately designed to strengthen food production because the most sustainable response to food insecurity is to empower our farmers to produce more food, reduce the cost of production, create rural employment and improve household incomes.”
He underscored the interconnectedness of the grain distribution and the broader agricultural interventions. He noted that the former offers immediate support to vulnerable households, while the latter strengthens the capacity of communities to achieve self-reliance in food production.
Regarding the distribution process, Governor Radda instructed local government officials, traditional and religious leaders, community-level committees, and other stakeholders to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability. He issued a stern warning that personal relationships, social status, or any other considerations must not be permitted to deny deserving citizens access to the grains. “The government cannot claim to have solved every challenge, but we will continue to listen, continue to improve and continue to deploy the resources available to us responsibly in addressing the needs of our people,” Radda affirmed.
Earlier at the event, Kamaladden Kabir, the State Coordinator for the Community Development Programme (CDP), remarked that the intervention demonstrates the administration's commitment to bringing government programmes closer to citizens at the grassroots. He assured that the established CDP structures would be utilized to ensure the grains reach vulnerable households, particularly widows, elderly persons, individuals with disabilities, and low-income families. Kabir stated, “This intervention is not simply about distributing food items; it is about ensuring that government support reaches communities in an organised, transparent and inclusive manner.”
Bello Lawal, the Chairman of Kaita LGA, commended the intervention as timely and highly beneficial to local residents. He also acknowledged that the Radda administration has implemented various projects in vital sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, and social welfare. Lawal expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are really happy with this initiative. We appreciate the efforts of the administration and will continue to support its programmes.”
