Anambra Electricity Regulatory Commission Unveils New Laws to Enhance Power Supply

The Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission has introduced four new regulatory bills aimed at improving the state's electricity supply. According to the commission, these laws are designed to break the monopoly held by the FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited, a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, which is responsible for power distribution in Anambra. The presentation of the new regulatory instruments took place at the Old Government House in Awka on Tuesday. The Chairman of the ASERC, Prof. Frank Nwoye Okafor, stated that the commission is tasked with regulating the Anambra electricity market and ensuring compliance with the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo's Integrated Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan. Okafor explained that the signing of the four draft regulations on customer protection, application for licences, investment in the electricity market, and business rules marks the beginning of a more structured, transparent, and equitable energy landscape for all. He noted that these regulations have been shaped by months of careful deliberation, expert consultation, and a shared commitment to getting it right. The regulations, according to Okafor, reflect the collective resolve to protect the rights of every consumer, establish clear and fair licensing frameworks that promote accountability, and create the conditions necessary to attract sustainable and responsible investment into the electricity market. The four regulatory instruments signed include the Business Rules, Customer Protection Regulation, Licensing Regulation, and Investment Regulation, which are expected to guide governance, protect consumers, and attract investment in Anambra's electricity sector. Okafor called for collaboration to enable the commission to work effectively, reminding partners, investors, and industry players that the regulations signal the seriousness of purpose to boost the Anambra economic environment through constant electricity supply.
