The Lagos State administration has officially rolled out the third iteration of its Agrithon initiative, introducing a substantial N200 million funding pool. This financial boost is specifically targeted at empowering youth-driven innovations and agribusinesses throughout the entire food systems value chain. Known as Lagos Agrithon 3.0, the programme's core purpose is to equip emerging agripreneurs with essential resources such as capital, guidance, technical assistance, avenues for networking, and access to markets, ultimately fostering the development of innovative concepts into viable, long-term enterprises.

During the launch event, Abisola Olusanya, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, explained that the initiative was conceived to tackle the hurdles faced by young innovators. She specifically highlighted insufficient access to capital, markets, technical know-how, and crucial collaborations. Olusanya further pointed out that despite Lagos being a prominent innovation centre in Nigeria and a major food market in Africa, concerted actions are necessary to bolster the state's agricultural innovation landscape and propel the evolution of its food systems.

Olusanya articulated that this programme aligns perfectly with the food security objectives set by both President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. She emphasized that agriculture is being redefined as an all-encompassing food systems sector, poised to create employment opportunities, draw in investments, and stimulate economic expansion. The Commissioner also drew attention to significant reforms implemented by the state government. These include the change in nomenclature from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, the creation of the Lagos Food Systems Roadmap, and the roll-out of specific programmes like 'Produce for Lagos' and the 'Agrinnovation Club'.

The Commissioner further revealed that earlier iterations of the Agrithon programme have already fostered successful entrepreneurs. These individuals have managed to expand their ventures, secure investments, and generate more job openings than initially projected. Olusanya characterized the 2026 edition as the most ambitious to date, boasting a N200 million grant fund. She detailed a stringent selection methodology, which encompasses initial screening, competitive business pitching, thorough due diligence, and comprehensive evaluation by seasoned industry specialists.

Olusanya extended an invitation to innovators from various agricultural sub-sectors to submit applications for the programme. This includes those involved in agricultural production, food processing, logistics, cold chain management, farm mechanisation, climate resilience strategies, biotechnology, and digital agriculture. Furthermore, she urged private sector entities, financial investors, and development collaborators to lend their support to initiatives designed to fortify Lagos's agricultural innovation framework.

Kamil Olufowobi, a key resource person present at the gathering, also addressed the audience. He strongly advised young entrepreneurs to transition from mere conceptualization to active implementation. Olufowobi underscored that entrepreneurial success is predicated on discipline, fortitude, unwavering consistency, and the capacity to cultivate robust professional connections. He concluded by suggesting that challenges and setbacks should be perceived as valuable chances for acquiring knowledge and personal development.

Ultimately, the Lagos Agrithon initiative is an integral component of the state government's overarching strategy. Its aims are to encourage greater youth engagement in the agricultural sector, foster groundbreaking innovation, and bolster food security through the deployment of technology-enabled solutions and the advancement of sustainable agribusiness practices.
