The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) agency has released its updated roster for 2026, detailing the countries whose citizens will need to secure a visitor visa before gaining entry into the North American nation. This revised list, made public on the IRCC's official website, confirms that the mandatory visa stipulations apply universally across all entry points, whether individuals arrive by air, land, road, train, or sea vessel.

Passport holders from the specified nations will not have access to automated border clearance systems. Instead, they must undergo a formal consular review process. For the majority of applicants from these designated countries, the pre-approval screening includes submitting biometric data, specifically fingerprints and official photographs, as part of the requirement.

Several African countries are prominently featured on Canada's 2026 visa-required register. These include Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Zimbabwe. Citizens from these nations, among others, must possess a valid visitor visa and passport for travel to or transit through Canada. The comprehensive list of countries needing a visitor visa encompasses more than 150 nations and territories globally, also featuring countries like India, China, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Egypt, Morocco, Iran, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Belize, Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Ukraine, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Yemen, and Zambia.

Canadian authorities have also clarified specific conditions under which a limited number of passport holders from certain visa-required countries might qualify for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) instead of a full visa. This special concession is strictly for air travellers who satisfy additional secondary security criteria, such as holding a valid prior travel clearance from select nations. However, it is crucial to note that the eTA option does not extend to those arriving by land or sea. Any individual from a conditionally eligible country entering Canada via road or cruise ship must still hold a standard physical visitor visa. Furthermore, stateless individuals and those holding refugee travel documents are subject to the same visa obligations, irrespective of their mode of travel.

In a related development, Canada’s immigration authority previously issued a stern public advisory to all foreign nationals seeking to enter or remain in the country. This warning highlighted that presenting false or altered documents is a grave offence, with the IRCC outlining the affected documents and the severe penalties for any misrepresentation.
