The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated a probe into a recent boat mishap in Benue State, an incident that tragically claimed the lives of eleven individuals. A statement released on Thursday by Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, the Bureau's Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, confirmed the commencement of the investigation.

Leading a team of investigators, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NSIB, undertook an on-the-spot safety assessment visit to Wadata, situated along the River Benue. This visit, which occurred on Wednesday, forms a crucial part of the bureau's mandate to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the unfortunate accident, gather direct information from affected communities and relevant stakeholders, and reinforce safety protocols across Nigeria's inland waterways.

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State lauded the NSIB's prompt intervention, advocating for a more robust and consistent presence of the bureau within the state. He emphasized the need for sustained efforts in safety advocacy and initiatives aimed at reducing risks along the River Benue. In response, Captain Badeh reiterated the NSIB's commitment to fostering collaborations with state governments, local communities, operators, and regulatory bodies to enhance transportation safety nationwide.

Captain Badeh stated, "The NSIB welcomes every opportunity to collaborate with state governments, local communities, operators, and regulators in advancing transport safety. We remain committed to exploring practical avenues for institutionalising safer navigation on the River Benue and across Nigeria’s inland waterways.”

Addressing members of the press during a briefing, the NSIB DG extended his sympathies to the Benue State Government and the bereaved families, characterizing the accident as a poignant reminder of the imperative for stricter adherence to safety regulations. “Our thoughts are with the families and communities affected by this unfortunate accident. Every loss of life is one too many, and while each occurrence presents its own circumstances, many accidents can be prevented through greater safety awareness, responsible operational practices, and stronger collaboration among regulators, operators, and waterway users,” Badeh remarked.

He further elucidated that the visit was not solely focused on understanding the causal factors of the accident but also on directly engaging with communities whose daily livelihoods depend on water transportation. He added, “We are here to listen, learn, and engage directly with those who operate and use these waterways. Safety is a shared responsibility, and sustained public education remains one of the most effective tools for reducing risks and preventing accidents on our waterways.”

The NSIB team subsequently visited Wadata, where they held discussions with community leaders, local residents, boat operators, and representatives from the Boat Operators Association. These interactions provided the investigators with invaluable eyewitness accounts and critical insights into local transport operations, existing safety practices, and operational challenges. The bureau affirmed that the findings from this visit would significantly contribute to its ongoing investigation and help in formulating future safety recommendations designed to avert similar tragedies.
