The United States government has sounded a note of warning to international travellers, including Nigerians, to be mindful of the items they bring into the country. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has stated that it is committed to enforcing the laws that prevent the entry of dangerous, illegal, or restricted products into the United States. As the agency responsible for enforcing hundreds of laws on behalf of dozens of federal agencies, the CBP has identified certain items as completely prohibited from entering the country due to the risks they pose to public health, safety, agriculture, wildlife, national security, and the economy. 'CBP officers are always at ports of entry and assume the responsibility of protecting America from all threats,' the agency stated. The list of prohibited items includes dangerous toys, vehicles that fail U.S. safety standards, bush meat, and illegal substances such as Rohypnol and absinthe. On the other hand, restricted items, which may only be imported after obtaining special permits, licences, or approvals from relevant federal authorities, include firearms, certain fruits and vegetables, animal products, animal by-products, and some live animals. The CBP has advised travellers to verify the status of items they intend to bring into the United States before embarking on international trips, as some products that may seem harmless may actually violate U.S. laws and regulations. 'Sometimes the products that cause injury, or have the potential to do so, may seem fairly innocent,' the agency warned. The warning is particularly significant for Nigerians travelling to the United States, as authorities have repeatedly intercepted undeclared food products, animal derivatives, medicinal substances, and agricultural items at American airports. In recent years, U.S. authorities have intensified scrutiny of agricultural and animal products entering the country due to concerns about invasive pests, livestock diseases, and public health threats. Many Nigerian travellers frequently transport local food items, herbs, dried meat, seeds, and traditional products for personal consumption or for relatives abroad. However, several of these products may require declaration, inspection, or prior approval before they can legally enter the United States. The CBP has stressed that its enforcement efforts are carried out in collaboration with agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), among others. The agency has urged travellers to familiarise themselves with U.S. customs regulations before departure to avoid delays, seizures, fines, or other legal consequences at ports of entry. As travel by Nigerians to the United States for tourism, education, business, and family visits continues to increase, American authorities have emphasised that compliance with customs laws remains a key requirement for all incoming travellers.
