The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged President Bola Tinubu to initiate an immediate probe into allegations surrounding the mismanagement of the N145 billion Safe Schools Initiative. This call to action comes as a response to the persistent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers across the country, despite the allocation of billions of naira aimed at enhancing security in educational institutions. According to SERAP, between March 2024 and May 2026, over 600 pupils and teachers have been abducted in school-related attacks. The group expressed concern that the recent abduction of over 30 pupils and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State highlights the failure of the authorities to secure schools. SERAP emphasized that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, and relevant anti-corruption agencies should investigate the allegations of missing, mismanaged, or diverted funds. The group stressed that anyone found responsible should face justice, and any missing funds should be fully recovered. Furthermore, SERAP called on President Tinubu and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to prioritize the rescue of the abducted students and teachers, ensuring their safe release and return. The group argued that the recurring attacks on schools raise serious questions about the effectiveness and transparency of the Safe Schools Initiative. SERAP warned that corruption linked to education security programs could have devastating consequences for children, particularly those from disadvantaged communities. The group cited constitutional provisions and Nigeria's international obligations, emphasizing that authorities have a legal duty to protect schoolchildren and educational institutions from violence and abductions. SERAP threatened to take legal action if the government fails to implement its recommendations, stating that it will see Nigerian authorities in court if the recommended measures are not immediately implemented.
