Tech Desk — If you use an Android phone, your free cloud storage space is about to get a lot tighter. Google has officially implemented a major policy shift that changes how your device backups are calculated, meaning many users could see their free 15GB account limits vanish faster than expected.

What Has Changed?

Previously, Google was quite generous with what it allowed you to store off the books. While your high-resolution photos and videos counted toward your 15GB Google One cap, basic phone data didn’t.

Under the new policy, all data packed into your Android device backups now directly counts against your storage limit. This newly targeted data pool includes:

Standard SMS and MMS text messages

Complete call history logs

System preferences and device settings

Individual app data stored on Google servers

Who Is Affected and When?

The rollout is staggered depending on your account status:

New Android Users: The policy applies immediately to any new backup setups.

Existing Accounts: The transition will quietly roll out over the coming months. If your available storage hasn't dropped yet, it likely will soon.

Is it a storage killer?

Google claims the data addition is relatively minor, estimating it will only consume about 40MB on average per user. However, for individuals with thousands of legacy text messages or heavy app data, that footprint could be significantly larger. Furthermore, this change comes on the heels of Google testing a reduced 5GB baseline for new accounts that do not link a verified phone number.

How to Protect Your Storage Space

To prevent a "Storage Full" warning from freezing your Gmail account, Google has introduced new granular toggles in your settings. Users can now go to the Google Backup page on their device and manually turn off backups for heavy individual categories, like legacy text messages or specific background apps, keeping the remaining free space open for vital files.
