WhatsApp Rolls Out Usernames for Enhanced Chat Privacy, Ditching Phone Numbers

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has announced a significant update for its popular messaging platform, introducing a feature that will enable users to connect through unique usernames instead of their phone numbers. This change, which is scheduled for a gradual rollout over the next few months, is intended to boost user privacy by ensuring that individuals' phone numbers are not automatically exposed within group conversations or during initial chats.
According to the company, users will now have the option to select and share a distinctive username. WhatsApp stated, “Designed to protect the privacy of your phone number,” highlighting the core purpose of this innovation. The new framework means that individuals will no longer be added to chats or contacted simply by their phone numbers. Instead, anyone wishing to connect will need to possess and accurately input the specific username, as there will be no public directory or search suggestions available.
Meta further clarified this, explaining: “There’s no directory to browse and no suggestions, so people need to know your exact username to contact you.” Given WhatsApp's massive global user base, which exceeds three billion individuals, the company cautioned that not every user might be able to secure their preferred username. The implementation will commence in phases, and users will receive notifications when username reservation becomes available in their respective regions.
Additionally, Meta indicated that content creators, small businesses, and various organizations will have the opportunity to claim usernames that align with their existing handles on other Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
