Meta's WhatsApp Set to Introduce Usernames for Enhanced Privacy

Millions of users on the Meta-owned messaging platform, WhatsApp, will soon be able to connect with contacts without needing to share their phone numbers, the company announced on Monday. This significant update will allow individuals to select unique usernames, which can then be shared with others, a move primarily "designed to protect the privacy of your phone number."
WhatsApp clarified in a statement that by restricting access to phone numbers, user privacy is safeguarded. This means that phone numbers will not be automatically disclosed in scenarios like being added to a large group chat or when initiating a conversation with a new individual or business for the first time. The company further explained that there will be no public directory or suggestions for usernames, meaning "people need to know your exact username to contact you."
Given that Meta boasts over three billion users across its platforms, many WhatsApp users might find their preferred usernames already taken, similar to other popular social media services. WhatsApp confirmed that the rollout of username reservations will be gradual, commencing worldwide "over the coming months." Users in each country will receive notifications within the app as the feature becomes available to them. Additionally, creators, small businesses, and organizations will have the advantage of claiming WhatsApp usernames that are consistent with their existing handles on other Meta platforms like Facebook or Instagram.
