Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has drawn comparisons between young goalkeeper Mike Penders and former Blues star Thibaut Courtois, expressing confidence in Penders to fill the gap left by Emi Martinez's recent injury. Penders, aged 21, made history last weekend by becoming Chelsea's youngest-ever Premier League custodian. He was introduced in the second half of their 2-0 victory against Everton, replacing Martinez who had to exit the game due to a fractured jaw requiring surgery.

Courtois, currently with Real Madrid and recognized globally as an elite goalkeeper, spent seven years on Chelsea's books from 2011 to 2018, though his initial three seasons were on loan at Atletico Madrid. Interestingly, Courtois previously played under Alonso's management during their time together at Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid.

Ahead of Chelsea's upcoming match against Tottenham on Saturday, Alonso commented on the striking resemblances between the two Belgian shot-stoppers. He stated, “A lot (of similarities), not just for the nationality. For the stature, both left-footed, both dominant in the air. I spoke with Thibaut when he was at the World Cup, I asked him about Mike. He said himself he could see a resemblance. We need to help him, support him. He’s a keeper for the present and for the future.”

Penders' move to Chelsea was finalized two years ago, but he spent the subsequent two seasons developing his skills, first at his former club Genk, and later on loan at Strasbourg, which is a sister club to Chelsea.

Alonso further expressed his conviction in Penders' capabilities, asserting, “He’s ready. He’s been training well, he’s played a couple of cup games, he’s shown he has a good level. When he came on against Everton, he showed his personality, his qualities. We are fully convinced that Mike can play very well.”

Last weekend at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Martinez received eight minutes of on-field medical attention before being stretchered off. Despite the severity, Alonso, whose team currently sits fourth in the Premier League, eight points adrift of table-toppers Manchester City, remains optimistic that Argentina's primary goalkeeper will make a swift return.

Regarding Martinez's recovery, Alonso provided an update: “Few weeks, hopefully less than more. The good thing is he’s feeling better. We need to listen to his feelings, the opinions of the doctors and specialists. Considering that it was a bad one (injury), he’s doing good.”
