Gunners Extend Winless Streak as Olivia Smith Rescues Point Against Birmingham City

Arsenal Women's Super League team faced continued struggles, being forced to come from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Birmingham City on October 17. This outcome extends manager Renee Slegers' side's winless run in the league to five matches, with their last victory recorded on September 6.
Birmingham City initially took the lead with their first attempt on target, a goal netted by Hurte. However, the Gunners managed to pull level thanks to a spectacular strike from Olivia Smith, which served as a crucial equaliser.
The match also saw Arsenal's Caldentey ruled out for approximately 10 weeks due to an injury.
Post-match, Birmingham manager Amy Merricks expressed immense pride in her squad's performance. Speaking to WSL, Merricks remarked, "I am just so proud of the group. To come here to the Emirates and score is huge. We keep getting better and better." She further elaborated on their preparations, stating, "We did a lot of work over the international break looking at key areas we need to build on. I am so proud of the players." Merricks commended her team's resilience and defensive discipline: "We had blocks on the line. We were relentless and played with courage. I have to really credit the backline today and how disciplined the midfield were." Concluding her remarks, she added, "We are in a great place and we just keep pushing." Merricks also highlighted how her team handled Arsenal's late pressure: "Arsenal threw the kitchen sink at us in last 20 minutes. I think we handled that period better than we have done before. We looked a lot more assured. I am just so proud of the group. It’s a brilliant point for us and we are moving in right direction."
This draw has intensified the scrutiny on Arsenal's manager, Renee Slegers. A fan named Rich from London shared his opinion, noting that this was "yet another result that won't help Slegers stay in her job." He further commented on the team's challenging start, observing, "6 games played and already looks like Arsenal might need to win the Champions League to qualify for next year's." Acknowledging the growing discontent from supporters, Slegers herself later admitted, "I understand the fans, their frustration."
