Daniel Dubois firmly established himself as a premier British heavyweight, successfully defending his WBO title in London with a decisive second-round stoppage of Fabio Wardley. The 29-year-old launched a relentless assault on Wardley, flooring him with a straight right just 20 seconds into their highly anticipated rematch at the O2 Arena.

Wardley managed to survive the initial round, but in the second, he was overwhelmed by another sustained attack from Dubois, leading his corner to throw in the towel. This marks Dubois's second consecutive stoppage victory over Wardley, following a thrilling 11-round bout in Manchester five months prior, where Dubois had to recover from two knockdowns to claim the title. This time, however, the champion faced no such drama, asserting his dominance from the opening bell and extending his professional record to 24 wins (23 by knockout) against three defeats.

Speaking after his victory, Dubois stated, "Fabio is a great boy, coming in for the second time, but it was my time and my era. I had my intentions, bad intentions from the beginning. My back was against the wall the first time, this time we just had to go out there and show that we mean business, which is what we did tonight."

For Wardley, 31, this was the second loss in his 23-fight professional career. He reflected, "I have always thrown myself in with the best competitors out there, the best in the business, the biggest, hardest, meanest guys around so, there is no shame in a loss when you're testing yourself against the best."

Dubois, who turned professional in 2017, has now secured 13 of his 24 victories within two rounds, truly living up to his 'My time, my era' declaration.

A packed O2 Arena, with a sell-out crowd of 19,000, clearly showed their allegiances. Wardley, known for his charismatic yet composed demeanour, walked out with a look of intense determination, his usual smile replaced by focus as fireworks erupted. Dubois, on the other hand, was met with jeers, marching directly past the fireworks and into the ring, wasting no time soaking in the atmosphere.

Among the notable personalities in attendance were actor Paddy Considine, comedian Rob Beckett, Oasis star Noel Gallagher, and darts world champion Luke Littler. With a combined 41 knockouts between the two fighters, few anticipated the fight would go the distance.

Pre-fight expectations suggested Wardley might attempt another fast start, mirroring his success in their first encounter where he dropped Dubois early. However, in a dramatic turn, Wardley was on the canvas himself within 17 seconds, after Dubois backed him into a corner and landed a precise straight right. Chants of 'oh Fabio Wardley' quickly subsided as Dubois unleashed a series of punishing combinations. A fierce attack towards the end of the first round left Wardley in significant trouble.

Trainer Ben Davison, who faced criticism for not stopping the first fight sooner, stood ready with a towel as his fighter barely made it to the bell. Concerns had already been raised about Wardley returning to the ring too quickly after the severe punishment he sustained in May, which left him bloodied and badly swollen. These fears appeared justified as the challenger struggled to counter Dubois's relentless pressure.

Wardley's defence seemed low, and his punches were wild and telegraphed, lacking the menace he displayed in Manchester. Cornered again in the second round, he endured another barrage of punches before Davison promptly intervened by throwing in the towel.

Lucrative opportunities now await Dubois, a two-time heavyweight world champion, who continues to be a prominent figure in British heavyweight boxing. After suffering defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in 2023 and last year, he had responded with impressive wins against Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and Anthony Joshua. His back-to-back stoppage victories over Wardley have solidified his position among the world's leading active heavyweights.

IBF champion Hrgovic, whom Dubois defeated in June 2024, entered the ring post-fight, indicating a desire for a rematch. However, promoter Frank Warren intends for Hrgovic to make his initial title defence in Croatia before pursuing a unification bout. Dubois's biggest payday could potentially come from a fight against the winner of the December showdown between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, which is expected to feature the WBA 'super' title. When asked about his next opponent, Dubois stated, "Whoever is next in line, really. I'm the champion now, and I want to get some big fights in. At this stage in my career, big money, big fights."

For Wardley, successive defeats now present a challenge to his trajectory in the heavyweight division.
