The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has handed superstar Cristiano Ronaldo a provisional suspension following his unauthorized exit from the national team's training camp last month. The 41-year-old captain's departure from the Portugal squad occurred during the Nations League fixtures, after he was benched without playing in the match against Norway and subsequently learned he would not be starting against Denmark.

In an extensive statement, the Al-Nassr forward revealed his decision to leave the team was prompted by coach Jorge Jesus, who he claimed had "broken his promise" on two occasions, leading him to accuse the coach of "total betrayal."

The FPF, in its own statement, confirmed the "temporary suspension" was imposed on October 9, emphasizing that the matter is being prioritized to ensure a swift investigation. FPF regulations stipulate that any player who fails to report for duty or abandons national team responsibilities without permission could face a suspension ranging from one to six months, in addition to a fine.

Pedro Proenca, the FPF President, conveyed to Portuguese media, "This is a period for calm and tranquility. We are all engaging in discussions. There is confidence in our captain's return. The standard disciplinary process will be followed."

Ronaldo has accepted accountability for his actions, offering apologies to his teammates and fans, while also acknowledging that he merits the impending disciplinary action.

Despite the controversy, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has affirmed he will not be retiring from international football with Portugal, as he continues his pursuit of reaching 1,000 career goals. Ronaldo currently holds the men's football records for Portugal with 146 goals in 234 appearances, having also played a pivotal role in the nation's Euro 2016 triumph and two Nations League victories. He had contemplated retiring from international duty after the previous World Cup but ultimately chose to continue. Just last week, Ronaldo scored his 980th career goal in Al-Nassr's 3-0 victory over Diriyah Club.

The situation surrounding Ronaldo has long been a subject of debate, with many supporters criticizing former Portugal coach Roberto Martinez for his insistence on starting Ronaldo in the most recent World Cup. The issue escalated on October 4 when Ronaldo was an unused substitute in Portugal's win against Norway. He subsequently left the camp upon discovering he would not be in the starting lineup for the upcoming match against Denmark.

Ronaldo later published a nearly 2,000-word statement on his Instagram account, delivering a strong critique of coach Jorge Jesus. While apologizing to fans and teammates, he denied that his last game for Portugal had been played, stating, "There will be one or more farewell games, when that time comes."

Coach Jorge Jesus indicated that the door remains open for Ronaldo if he decides to return, though he refrained from commenting directly on Ronaldo's recent statement. Portuguese football journalist Delgado shared his perspective with BBC Radio 5 Live, saying, "I don't see a way back. In his statement, Ronaldo said he would return to the national team, but at the same time, he called Jesus a liar three times. In opinion polls conducted in Portugal, only 15% supported Ronaldo. People feel we owe him a lot of gratitude, but his time has passed, and he should understand that. The problem is Ronaldo doesn't understand. He wants to keep playing like he's 24, not 41. Things won't be the same again. Even if he plays for Portugal again or a farewell game is arranged, things won't go back to how they were. What Ronaldo did for Portuguese football is unique and amazing, and we must thank him for his service to the country. But he is 41 now, and he doesn't have a place in Portugal's best 11 players."
