Following Manchester United's recent defeat to Atletico Madrid, manager Michael Carrick has refrained from offering extensive comments regarding defender Lisandro Martinez's public criticism of the club's leadership. Carrick indicated a need to first ascertain the full facts surrounding the situation before making any definitive statement.

Martinez, in a post-match interview with Amazon Prime on Tuesday, had openly faulted United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, for what he perceived as insufficient squad investment during the summer transfer window. The Argentine defender asserted that Carrick should not be held responsible for the team's underwhelming start to the season, arguing that the manager had not received adequate backing from the club's hierarchy.

Manchester United's performance this season has been a cause for concern, with only two victories recorded across nine competitive matches. This poor run has intensified scrutiny on the club's recruitment approach. Despite the concerns, Wilcox, alongside Chief Executive Officer Omar Berrada, oversaw a summer spending of £155 million on new first-team players. This included the acquisition of goalkeeper Karl Darlow and midfielders Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba, and Youri Tielemans.

However, Martinez maintains that these additions were not enough to build upon the team's successes from the previous season and has called for greater accountability from those responsible for Manchester United's footballing strategy. When questioned on Tuesday about whether he would address Martinez's interview directly, Carrick responded, “I need to find out a bit more about it before I can say if and what is going to be done. I really can’t comment any further because I haven’t seen it.”

The United manager was also pressed on whether he concurred with Martinez's assessment that the club had failed to provide him with sufficient support in the transfer market. Carrick declined to take a stance, explaining that he had not watched the interview. He further suggested that Martinez's comments might have been influenced by the immediate disappointment of the match result.

“I haven’t seen the interview; I’ve heard about it as the interview was done, but I think it’s a little bit on the emotions of the game as well,” Carrick stated. “Coming here and being disappointed not to get something from the game. Straight after a game for me isn’t the time to talk about that interview because I haven’t seen it, so I can’t really comment on that. But I think it’s important for us to move forward quickly, really. There is a big game on Sunday, and it’s really important that we move forward and we stay focused on that. There’s disappointment within the group. I’m very disappointed in certain things, and the boys are as well.”

Despite the club's ongoing struggles, Carrick affirmed the players' unwavering commitment to the team and their determination to improve results. He acknowledged the palpable frustration surrounding their current form but expressed no concerns about the squad's unity or competitive spirit. Carrick noted that his players were “hurting” due to the challenging start to the campaign, while commending their effort and dedication.

“I don’t doubt the togetherness or the wanting to win or the willingness to do things to win. I really don’t doubt that,” he declared. “I know results-wise, it’s easy to look and think there’s something kind of deeply wrong because we haven’t won enough games, so I understand that.”
