Michael Carrick Faces Scrutiny as Man Utd Draw 1-1 with Fulham in EPL

Manchester United managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Fulham, courtesy of Matheus Cunha’s late goal on Sunday. However, this result has intensified the scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick following yet another uninspired performance from his squad. Carrick’s team, desperate for a win at Craven Cottage, ultimately found themselves fortunate to escape with a single point. United conceded a goal in the second half due to an unfortunate own goal by Lisandro Martinez, who inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after goalkeeper Senne Lammens initially parried a shot from Calvin Bassey.

While Cunha's dramatic equalizer prevented United from suffering a third consecutive loss, it offered little cause for jubilation for Carrick and his struggling squad. The Red Devils have now recorded only a single victory in their last five Premier League outings and currently sit 10 points adrift of table-toppers Manchester City. Having already lost three of their initial seven fixtures across all competitions this season, the team goes into the international break with Carrick facing considerable pressure.

Carrick has publicly stated his indifference regarding his long-term position at Old Trafford. Yet, following consecutive painful defeats to Manchester City and Brighton, this recent draw represents another blow to his embattled management. Still reeling from Erling Haaland’s winning goal for City in the previous weekend’s derby — a goal that the referees' association later confirmed should have been disallowed — United had also squandered a two-goal advantage against Brighton in the League Cup third round on Wednesday. Managing only a draw against Fulham, who are currently second-to-last in the league, adds to a season already marred by numerous disappointing performances for United.

Despite expectations for them to at least replicate last season’s third-place finish, United’s performance has regressed significantly since Carrick's permanent appointment after a successful interim period. The team is scheduled to resume play on October 10 with a home fixture against Tottenham, who currently occupy the bottom spot in the league. Both Carrick and Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi will be keenly seeking a victory to reverse their respective fortunes.

A "fatal cocktail" of issues seemed to foreshadow their difficult afternoon. United narrowly avoided conceding early on when Fulham forward Gonzalo Garcia missed a promising opportunity, dragging his shot wide from a dangerous area. This early close call prompted a reaction from United, with Bruno Fernandes setting up Martinez for a powerful shot from the edge of the box, which demanded an excellent save from Bernd Leno. United threatened again shortly after when Cunha laid the ball back to Fernandes, whose powerful effort struck the goalpost.

However, United’s defence appeared nervous. Josh King’s half-volley necessitated a good save from Lammens, who then followed up with another clever stop to thwart Sander Berge. Oscar Bobb had a clear chance to open the scoring moments later but failed to hit the target, squandering a golden opportunity against Lammens. Capitalizing on United’s defensive vulnerabilities, Fulham launched continuous attacks in the final moments of the first half. Lammens was forced to parry another powerful shot from King, and subsequently rushed out of his goal to prevent Alex Iwobi, as Fulham intensified their offensive pressure.

United's noticeable lack of attacking impetus and clinical finishing, coupled with disorganized defending, created a detrimental combination that ultimately resulted in Fulham’s first goal. Following Cunha’s careless loss of possession deep in United’s territory, Carrick's players reacted sluggishly as Bassey unleashed a strong shot, which Lammens managed to palm away. Martinez then attempted to clear the rebound but his oddly misjudged swipe sent the ball directly into his own net, deflecting off the helpless Lammens. As United desperately sought to salvage a point, Leno made crucial interventions, blocking Bryan Mbeumo’s curled effort and diving left to save Cunha’s low shot. United’s persistent late efforts eventually paid off with an equalizer in the 89th minute. Cunha took a speculative shot from outside the box, and it took a significant deflection off David Affengruber, finding its way into the net. This moment, for a change, saw fortune favour Carrick’s side.
