Harry Kane Affirms England's Proximity to Spain's Elite Football Standard

England captain Harry Kane has expressed his conviction that the Three Lions are operating at a level comparable to world champions Spain, despite suffering a narrow defeat in their recent Nations League encounter. The match, held at Wembley on Saturday, saw Thomas Tuchel's squad initially fall behind to a second-minute goal from Lamine Yamal.

However, England mounted a comeback before halftime, taking the lead through strikes from Anthony Gordon and Kane himself. The England skipper had an opportunity to extend their advantage to 3-1 from the penalty spot but unfortunately slipped, sending his effort against the crossbar. Spain then demonstrated their renowned quality, turning the game around to secure a 3-2 victory with an equalizer from Alex Baena and a decisive winner by Mikel Oyarzabal.

Despite the loss, Kane remains steadfast in his belief that England's performance showcased their capability to compete with the reigning World Cup and European Championship holders. "I think we’re close, without a doubt," Kane stated. "I think anyone who watched that game will see that."

He further acknowledged Spain's superior trophy cabinet, adding, "They have the trophies to back it up, so until we do that, we can only use words. We have to show it on the pitch." England had previously been defeated by Spain in the Euro 2024 final and missed out on a World Cup final appearance after losing to Argentina in the semi-finals, ultimately finishing third.

Kane is confident that England's display against Spain on Saturday would have made a strong impression on their formidable opponents. The Bayern Munich striker reflected, "We showed a lot of good things on the pitch, but in the big moments, we didn’t quite have it. But we’re top four in the world. We finished third in the World Cup, so without a doubt, we’re close, and I think they would have felt that out there today for sure."
