Ronaldo Extends Europe's International Cap Record to 234, Joins Elite List

Portuguese football icon, Cristiano Ronaldo, has further cemented his legacy by extending his record as Europe's most-capped male international player, now boasting an impressive 234 appearances for his national team. This latest milestone was achieved during Portugal's narrow 1-0 triumph over Wales in their UEFA Nations League Group D opening fixture.

The 41-year-old superstar first made history in June 2023, becoming the inaugural player to reach 200 international caps, a feat he celebrated with a crucial 89th-minute winning goal against Iceland. Prior to that, in March 2023, Ronaldo had already surpassed the European record by securing his 197th cap against Liechtenstein, where he also found the back of the net twice. His international tally reached 199 caps three days before hitting the 200-mark, during a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 17, 2023. Ronaldo had initially eclipsed Spain's Sergio Ramos, who held the previous European record of 180 appearances, back in 2021. Furthermore, his participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash against Morocco saw him draw level with Kuwait's Bader Al-Mutawa's then-world record of 196 caps. Beyond his cap record, Ronaldo also stands as Europe's all-time leading international goalscorer. He crossed the 100-goal threshold in September 2020, equalled Ali Daei's world record of 109 goals during Euro 2020, and then surpassed it on September 1, 2021, during the European Qualifiers. In the summer of 2026, he reportedly scored his 144th, 145th, and 146th international goals, becoming the first player to score in six different World Cup final tournaments.
