Alonso Confirms João Pedro, James Possible for Brentford Game

Full Story
Chelsea's head coach, Xabi Alonso, has provided an update on the fitness of key players João Pedro and Reece James, indicating they remain in contention for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Brentford on Friday. This comes despite recent concerns regarding their physical condition.
João Pedro, who recently withdrew from the Brazilian national squad due to an injury, and Reece James, who was absent for a portion of Chelsea’s training session on Tuesday, are both being closely monitored. Alonso, however, has refrained from definitively ruling out either player for the highly anticipated west London derby. The final decisions on their participation are expected to be made after the team’s last training session.
In a statement published on Chelsea’s official website on Friday, Alonso was quoted saying, “In terms of injuries and in terms of the squad we are having the last training session tomorrow so no-one is ruled out for us for Friday.” He further stressed a cautious approach, especially concerning João Pedro’s condition, but confirmed the Brazilian forward could still feature. “So I prefer to be cautious and we will wait until tomorrow to take the final decision on every player,” Alonso added. “We will see tomorrow if Joao is ready to play, it’s a possibility.” João Pedro’s availability would provide a significant boost to Alonso’s squad, given his impressive start to the season with three goals and three assists in just four Premier League appearances.
Regarding James, whose partial absence from Tuesday’s training session sparked speculation, Alonso downplayed its significance. He stated, “For Reece, it was just a decision for Tuesday and we see his development and tomorrow we will decide.”
The club is also keeping a close eye on midfielder Moisés Caicedo, who is progressing in his recovery from injury. Alonso noted, “He’s getting closer and tomorrow we will take the final decision on the team and on the squad that is coming to Brentford.” Additionally, Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson are set to undergo assessments before the match, with final decisions also pending after the last training session. Alonso reiterated the need for thorough evaluation, saying, “Tomorrow is the final decision. Sorry to repeat myself, but before the players know we need to assess all the positions with the last training and tomorrow we will make the decision for the game in Brentford.”
Chelsea is scheduled to face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday at 8 pm, aiming to secure a victory after their recent 2-2 draw with Hull City. With several crucial players undergoing late fitness tests, Alonso will finalise his squad only after the concluding stages of preparation.
