Wayne Rooney Labels Ex-Teammate Andy Carroll's Autobiography Claims 'Fabrication'

Former England international, Wayne Rooney, has vehemently dismissed allegations made by his erstwhile teammate, Andy Carroll, regarding his conduct during national team duties. Rooney described the account detailed in Carroll's new autobiography as a complete "fabrication," firmly rejecting claims of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking while representing England.

In his recently published memoir titled 'Owning It', Andy Carroll alleges that Rooney would frequently invite fellow England players to his hotel room for beer and cigarettes during international breaks around 2010 and 2011. Carroll's book describes Rooney's room as often being "surrounded by cartons of fags, crates of lager and bottles of wine (which he got the hotel manager to deliver to his room)," becoming a hub for players. Carroll clarified, "No one got smashed, it was just Wazza’s way of breaking the monotony with a couple of drinks."

Responding publicly to the accusations, Rooney stated he rarely addresses inaccurate stories about himself but felt compelled to speak out on this particular matter. "I don’t normally comment on falsehoods written about me — but I will address this one," Rooney asserted. He further clarified their relationship, saying, "Andy knows that he and I never really socialised. I bumped into him once, coincidentally, while on a holiday — but that’s about it. As for this ‘tale’ about me drinking on England duty, it’s a fabrication. I don’t know where the story comes from. It’s disappointing."

Despite Rooney's strong denial, Carroll has reportedly maintained the veracity of his version of events. A friend of Carroll, quoted in the report, expressed the former striker's surprise at Rooney's rebuttal. The friend stated, "Andy is beyond baffled by the suggestion that he invented a story. He has no reason to make something like this up and stands by every word of his account. This is how Andy remembers the night and he won’t be bullied into changing his version simply because someone else now disputes it. It is his honest recollection of the events as he experienced them. He is so proud of this book."

The anonymous friend also confirmed that Carroll's autobiography underwent rigorous editorial and legal reviews prior to its release. "The manuscript was carefully assessed ahead of publishing, with the appropriate checks undertaken in line with standard publishing practice," the source explained, adding, "The book went through all the usual editorial and legal checks before being printed."

Both Rooney and Carroll were members of the England national team during their respective playing careers. However, Rooney consistently denies any significant social interaction between them. The contrasting accounts from the two former teammates leave the alleged events disputed, with no independent corroboration provided in the report to confirm either narrative.
