Yaya Toure Makes History as First African Coach in Champions League Group Stage

Former Ivory Coast international, Yaya Toure, has etched his name in history books by becoming the inaugural African coach to guide a football club into the prestigious UEFA Champions League league phase. This remarkable achievement came with Slovak champions, Slovan Bratislava, who clinched their spot in the elite European competition after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Slovenian side NK Celje in extra time during the second leg of their decisive qualifying tie on Wednesday. The win secured a 3-2 aggregate score for Slovan, propelling them into the exclusive group of 36 clubs participating in this season’s Champions League league phase.

What makes this feat even more impressive is that the 43-year-old Toure is currently in his very first senior managerial role. Appointed as Slovan’s head coach in June, he has swiftly demonstrated his coaching prowess, successfully navigating the club through three rigorous qualifying rounds to reach European football’s premier competition. Slovan Bratislava’s journey through the qualifiers began with a clash against Georgia’s Saburtalo, followed by overcoming Sweden’s Mjallby, and culminating in the final play-off round against Celje.

The decisive goal that sealed Slovan’s passage to the league phase was struck by Cristian Martinez in the 100th minute, giving Toure’s side the crucial advantage. Toure’s accomplishment now sets a new benchmark, surpassing the previous milestone held by Nigerian coach Ndubuisi Egbo, who led Albanian side KF Tirana into the Champions League qualifying rounds in 2020 but did not advance them to the main competition.

The former midfield maestro, who famously lifted the Champions League trophy with Barcelona in 2009, will now face some of Europe’s football giants from the dugout. Slovan’s initial fixture in the league phase presents a formidable challenge, as the Slovak team is scheduled to visit defending champions Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. PSG are aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive Champions League title, having secured victories in both the 2025 and 2026 editions. For Toure, this encounter marks an immediate return to a competition he once dominated as a player, but this time, he stands on the touchline as a pioneering African coach.
