Monaco Hands PSG 2-1 Home Defeat, Reigning Champions Still Winless in Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain's challenging start to the new French football season persisted on Friday evening as they squandered an early lead, eventually falling 2-1 at home to an impressive Monaco side, who now sit atop the Ligue 1 table. The reigning European champions had hoped to kickstart their domestic campaign but instead suffered another setback at the Parc des Princes.

Club captain Marquinhos initially put PSG in front just after the half-hour mark in what was Luis Enrique’s team’s first home fixture of the campaign. However, Monaco staged a strong comeback in the second half. Flavio Nazinho netted the equaliser before the Belgian winger Stanis Idumbo secured the winning goal for the principality club, sealing their third victory in as many games and placing them firmly at the summit of the early standings.

Prior to the match, PSG had announced that their coach, Luis Enrique, had extended his contract for three years, committing him to the club until 2030. Despite this long-term commitment, the team's immediate form is a concern as they prepare to commence their quest for a third consecutive Champions League title next midweek against Slovan Bratislava at home. Domestically, their stuttering performance leaves them with just two points from three Ligue 1 matches, already trailing Monaco by seven points.

The Qatar-owned club had tasted success last month by defeating Aston Villa to clinch the UEFA Super Cup. However, their subsequent French Champions Trophy match saw them lose to Lens, followed by draws in their initial two Ligue 1 away games against Rennes and Lille. Notably, in both those draws, PSG had to fight back from a two-goal deficit late in the game, with Marquinhos scoring a dramatic last-gasp equaliser against Lille a week prior.

The Brazilian defender, Marquinhos, opened the scoring in the 31st minute against Monaco by expertly converting Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s cross with his chest. At that point, a much-needed victory seemed within reach for PSG, especially against a Monaco team that had endured a tumultuous week off the pitch.

Monaco, now under the guidance of former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis, had been hoping to secure a significant player sale to the Premier League before the transfer window closed, aiming to offset their failure to qualify for this season’s Champions League. Their plans were disrupted when United States World Cup star Folarin Balogun pulled out of an agreed £40 million ($54 million) transfer to Everton on deadline day. This came shortly after Monaco had withdrawn from a deal to sell Lamine Camara to Chelsea, as they were banking on Balogun's move to proceed. Balogun, who was controversially at the centre of a World Cup incident where US President Donald Trump reportedly intervened to get a red card suspended so he could play against Belgium, was not included in the squad for this match and has yet to feature for his club this season.

Senegal midfielder Camara, however, was in action for the visiting side. Monaco drew level in the 58th minute when Portuguese left-back Nazinho headed in at the far post from a Jordan Teze delivery. This goal rewarded Monaco's strong start to the second half, and they took the lead in the 72nd minute. Aleksandr Golovin set up Idumbo, who then beat PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov at his near post.

This defeat marks the second consecutive season PSG has lost at home to Monaco. Late substitutions, including reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele and Spain World Cup final hero Ferran Torres, could not salvage the game for the hosts. Torres saw a late goal disallowed for an offside involving Dembele, and Dembele himself was thwarted by a superb save from Lukas Hradecky deep in stoppage time.

Earlier results in the league saw Lyon defeat Auxerre 3-1, placing them in second position, two points behind Monaco and level on points with Lille, who secured a 1-0 victory against Toulouse on Thursday courtesy of an Ayase Ueda goal.
