Barcelona's head coach, Hansi Flick, has confirmed that the club's recent acquisition, Rodri, will not feature in the Spanish champions' opening La Liga fixture against Elche this Sunday. However, there is a possibility that the former Manchester City midfielder could make his debut in their subsequent match, scheduled for Thursday against Athletic Bilbao.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Flick provided an update on Rodri's integration. “He’s very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team,” Flick stated. “This is the plan. He’s a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great.” The Catalan giants secured the services of the Spanish World Cup winner in a deal that could eventually be worth up to 76.5 million euros ($89 million), aiming to strengthen their midfield options.

Despite this significant midfield reinforcement, Barcelona is still actively searching for a new striker in the transfer market, following the departures of key forwards Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Flick kept his cards close to his chest regarding who would lead the attack against Elche, but he did highlight the impressive pre-season performances of young Egyptian talent, Hamza Abdelkarim. The 18-year-old forward has already netted four goals in various friendly matches.

Flick lauded Abdelkarim's potential, saying, “Hamza is having a really great pre-season. He’s a number nine, he’s young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you’re playing in this position, and he made a great job.” The coach also noted that new wingers Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, alongside Raphinha and Dani Olmo, are versatile enough to operate as false nines if needed.

Furthermore, Flick confirmed that full-back Joao Cancelo, whose transfer was completed earlier this week, is fully available for Barcelona's upcoming away game at the Martinez Valero stadium. “He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” Flick added, expressing confidence in Cancelo's immediate impact.
