Nigerian Defender Chibuike Nwaiwu Eyed by Crystal Palace as Replacement for Lacroix

Following Chelsea's acquisition of Maxence Lacroix in a £52 million deal, Crystal Palace has intensified their search for a capable defender to fill the void. One of the players on their radar is Nigerian international Chibuike Nwaiwu, who currently plays for Trabzonspor. Although Nwaiwu is not their primary target, he has been identified as a potential backup option should their pursuit of Augsburg's Chrislain Matsima fail to materialize. Matsima, valued at €22 million by his German club, is Crystal Palace's first choice to replace Lacroix. Nwaiwu, contracted to Trabzonspor until June 2030, has reportedly informed his representatives of his desire to continue his career in the Premier League. The 22-year-old defender has enjoyed a remarkable rise to prominence, earning three senior caps for the Nigerian national team and winning several domestic trophies, including the Turkish Cup with Trabzonspor. However, any potential deal for Nwaiwu may be complicated by Trabzonspor's significant leverage in transfer negotiations, with the club having recently rejected a €28 million offer from Fulham. Trabzonspor is reportedly holding out for a record-breaking fee between €30 million and €35 million for the young centre-back.
