Following their thrilling comeback victory over England in the semi-finals, the Argentine soccer team is facing potential disciplinary action from FIFA due to the display of a contentious banner referencing the Falkland Islands. The banner, which reads 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas' or 'Malvinas are Argentinian,' was held up by several players, including Giovani Lo Celso, Lisandro Martínez, and Nicolas Otamendi, after the match. The Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Spanish, are a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic that Argentina claims as part of its sovereign territory. The dispute over the islands has been a longstanding issue between the two nations, with Argentina's military junta-led government seizing control of the islands in 1982, only to be met with a military response from Britain, resulting in the Falklands War. Despite Argentina's defeat, the country continues to assert its claim to the islands. FIFA's stadium code of conduct for the 2026 World Cup prohibits the display of political, offensive, or discriminatory materials, including banners and flags. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) also has rules in place that prohibit political messaging on the field. In 2014, the Argentine Football Association was fined £20,000 by FIFA for a similar incident involving a banner with the same text. Argentina's vice-president, Victoria Villarruel, took to social media to express her support for the team, sharing a clip of Argentine soldiers landing on the islands in 1982 and stating that 'it wasn't just another match.' She also tweeted that 'The Malvinas are Argentine! They banned us from bringing them to the stadium, but they forgot that we carry them in our blood and in our hearts.' FIFA has yet to comment on whether it will take action against the Argentinian team, but any decision is likely to be closely scrutinized amid allegations of favoritism towards Argentina and its star player, Lionel Messi.
