Hitchin Town FC Honours Mark Burke's Enduring Legacy After Two Decades

Mark Burke, a revered figure at Hitchin Town FC, commenced his journey with the club in 1985, arriving from Queens Park Rangers. Before this move, he honed his skills in the youth ranks of his hometown club, Luton Town, from 1982 to 1984. During his time with the 'Hatters' youth team, Burke played alongside notable talents such as Tim Breaker, Stacey North, Mitchell Thomas, Garry Parker, Mark Stein, Kingsley Black, and David Oldfield, many of whom later featured for David Pleat’s Luton first team and subsequently for other top-tier clubs.
Luton legend Alan West, who was then the player-manager for Hitchin, secured Burke's services. Burke made his League debut on the inaugural day of the 1985/86 season in an away fixture against Bognor Regis. On that memorable day, he shared the pitch with Paul Giggle, who would eventually become the club's record appearance maker. Burke solidified his position in the first team, competing at Step 2 for several seasons until Hitchin faced relegation to Step 3 in the 1987/88 season, following a home defeat to champions Yeovil Town.
In the early 1990s, under the stewardship of Steve Norris and Bill Baldry, Burke was handed the captain's armband. After several near misses, Hitchin eventually reclaimed their Step 2 status by clinching the Isthmian Division 1 League Title in the 1992/93 season. Burke proudly lifted the trophy, playing alongside former Luton players Paul Price and Rob Johnson, a Littlewoods Cup winner. Rob Johnson was instrumental in persuading another Hatters legend, Ricky Hill, to feature in a few matches under manager Andy Melvin and his assistant, Robin Wainwright, also a former Hatter.
The mid-90s marked one of the most successful periods in Hitchin Town's history, with Burke leading the team under Andy Melvin's management. The club consistently competed at the top end of the Step 2 table, achieved their first Football League scalp in the FA Cup by defeating Hereford United, and replicated this feat the following season by beating Bristol Rovers in front of Match of the Day cameras at Top Field. Furthermore, they secured the Herts County Senior Cup for the first time in two decades, triumphing 4-1 over Boreham Wood, with Burke scoring the opening goal.
Burke's career faced a setback with a couple of severe knee injuries, leading to extended periods on the sidelines. Unfortunately, Hitchin was relegated to Step 3 once more in the 1997/98 season. However, the 'Canaries' made an immediate comeback, with Burke captaining the team to promotion in the 1998/99 season, finishing as runners-up to Canvey Island. This team featured future Norwich City player Zema Abbey and Coventry City-bound Chris McMenamin.
In his final playing years, Burke transitioned into a squad player, mentoring promising young talents emerging from the newly established scholarship programme. His illustrious playing career concluded on April 30, 2005, in an away match against Stamford, where he played alongside fellow Hitchin legend and former Hatter, Ian Scott, who had been his teammate since the 1992/93 league-winning season. Across a twenty-year career, Mark Burke amassed 731 appearances and scored 20 goals, holding the club’s League Appearance record. His achievements include a League title, a League promotion, FA Cup giant killings, and a Senior Cup victory.
Post-retirement from the first team, Burke continued to play for the Reserves, managed by former Luton player Darren Salton, further assisting youth development. Towards the end of his playing days, he initiated the 'Football in the Community' scheme, which involved football holiday camps and coaching in local schools. He significantly expanded this programme over the next five years and continues to oversee its operations, which now include a College programme and 'Ability Counts' projects.
In the summer of 2010, former player Charlie Williams was appointed first-team Manager and brought Burke in as his Assistant. Both had played together in the 1996 Herts Senior Cup triumph and the 1998/99 promotion-winning squad. In their inaugural season, they secured promotion to Step 3 by winning a Play-Off Final against Daventry Town at Top Field in 2010/11. After two seasons consolidating their position in the Southern Premier League, Williams' unexpected resignation led to Burke taking the helm as first-team Manager for the 2013/14 season, immediately appointing Adam Parker, another former teammate from the 1996 Herts Senior Cup and 1998/99 promotion teams, as his Assistant.
Burke and Parker's successful tenure spanned ten seasons. During this period, they reached the Herts Senior County Cup final three times, winning twice against Step 1 opposition Boreham Wood (2-1 in 2016) and Step 2 side Bishops Stortford (2017). They also contested four Herts Charity Cup finals, emerging victorious twice against Step 2 Hemel Hempstead Town in 2018 and 2019. Further cup success came with the Southern League Cup win in 2018 against Didcot Town.
In the Southern League Premier Division, the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons were particularly strong, with Hitchin securing Play-Off positions. However, promotion eluded them on both occasions, losing at home to Hungerford in the 2016 semi-final after leading 2-0, and agonizingly losing 2-1 after extra time away to Leamington in 2017, having been just a minute away from a 1-0 victory. For the first time in over 30 years, since Burke had captained Hitchin to FA Cup 1st Round proper giant killings, he guided the 'Canaries' past Leatherhead in a replay, setting up a First Round tie against Solihull Moors at Top Field, which featured on BBC coverage. Despite a packed crowd, Hitchin couldn't quite replicate the glory of the 90s, though it remained a significant achievement.
Throughout his managerial career, Burke and Parker were dedicated to developing young players, a fact Burke is immensely proud of, maintaining contact with many former players who have progressed to higher levels of football. Despite his resignation as Manager in 2024, Mark Burke remains an integral part of Hitchin Town FC, continuing to oversee the expansion of the Community Scheme. The club plans to celebrate his extensive contributions on Saturday, July 11, 2026, with a 1 PM kick-off at Top Field, in a match against his other football love, Luton Town FC.
