History Made: Cape Verde, Smallest Nation, Qualifies for World Cup Knockout

The island nation of Cape Verde has carved out an extraordinary place in FIFA World Cup annals, making history as the smallest country yet to advance to the tournament's knockout rounds. This feat was sealed after their final group stage match against Saudi Arabia ended in a goalless draw on Friday in Houston.
With a population barely exceeding 600,000, Cape Verde successfully navigated Group H without a single defeat, accumulating three crucial points from an equal number of draws against formidable opponents: Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, thereby securing their spot. Reflecting the resilience of his countrymen, Cape Verde's veteran 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha, remarked, "We are small, but we have big hearts and we are fighters."
As newcomers to the World Cup stage, the team delivered one of the competition's most significant upsets by holding pre-tournament favourites Spain to a goalless stalemate in their opening fixture. They built on this momentum by netting their inaugural World Cup goals in an exciting 2-2 draw against Uruguay.
Concluding their group stage campaign with Friday's draw, they remained undefeated, securing three points and finishing in second position within Group H. This placed them directly behind 2010 champions Spain and one point clear of two-time World Cup winners Uruguay. Their journey continues as Cape Verde prepares to challenge the reigning champions, Argentina, in a highly anticipated round-of-32 encounter scheduled for July 3 in Miami Gardens, Florida.
