Ivory Coast's head coach, Emerse Faé, has strongly criticized German football icon Bastian Schweinsteiger for comments he made regarding the Ivorian national team. Schweinsteiger, while appearing on German broadcaster ARD before a match between Germany and Ivory Coast last weekend, offered his assessment of what the German players could anticipate from their opponents.

"A bit African football, a bit unorthodox, a bit wild, a bit perhaps also not so conditioned by tactics. We have to be prepared for it to be unpredictable," Schweinsteiger stated during the broadcast.

Faé, who recently guided Ivory Coast to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history with a 2-0 victory over Curaçao on Thursday, addressed Schweinsteiger's remarks after the win. He expressed hope that the former German international's statement was merely "a clumsy statement that's not necessarily reflective of what's in his life."

However, Faé did not mince words, adding, "We could call it racist, if we were calling a spade a spade." The Ivorian coach highlighted that his West African squad relies on intelligence and strategic play just as much as physical prowess to achieve their progress in the World Cup.

He further questioned Schweinsteiger's motives, suggesting the pundit might be attempting "to create a buzz" in his broadcasting career by perpetuating outdated racial stereotypes. Faé conveyed his personal disappointment, stating, "When I heard his comment, I was disappointed. Disappointed in the man. It is odd he would speak that way." Schweinsteiger's comments had already drawn criticism earlier in the week for appearing to reinforce racist stereotypes.
