Late Kaan Ayhan Goal Hands Turkey 3-2 World Cup Victory Over US

The United States, fielding a significantly altered lineup, suffered a 3-2 defeat against Turkey on Thursday in an exhilarating World Cup group stage encounter. Despite the loss, which came in a match with no bearing on their qualification, coach Mauricio Pochettino affirmed it would not diminish the co-hosts' considerable momentum as they prepare for the knockout stages.
Already confirmed as Group D winners, the American squad had arrived in Los Angeles hoping to maintain their flawless record with a third consecutive win. However, their strategic focus was clearly on the upcoming last-32 fixture against Bosnia-Herzegovina, scheduled for next Wednesday. For Turkey, who were already eliminated and had failed to score in their previous disastrous losses to Paraguay and Australia, the sole objective was to reclaim some national pride.
The US initially took an early lead, then clawed back an equalizer after conceding two Turkish goals, only to ultimately fall to a decisive Kaan Ayhan strike deep into stoppage time. Pochettino, who made nine changes to his starting eleven ahead of the Bosnia clash, defended his selection. "We had other priorities. We did want to win, we wanted the victory, but there were other things that we need to balance out, and I made the very best decisions," he stated. He further questioned, "What does it mean to win three (group) matches if you’re going to be losing the next one, and you’re not going to be winning the World Cup?" during a visibly tense post-match press conference.
For the third game running, the US enjoyed a dream start when backup center-half Auston Trusty scored unmarked at the far post from a corner kick. This marked the Celtic defender’s maiden international goal and, at just under three minutes, was the second-fastest goal scored by the US in a World Cup. Yet, Turkey refused to give up. After 62 unsuccessful attempts in their first two matches, their 63rd effort proved lucky, courtesy of their star player, Arda Guler. The Real Madrid forward skillfully outwitted Mark McKenzie with a clever dummy, allowing the ball to reach Baris Alper Yilmaz on the right flank. Yilmaz then crossed it back to Guler, who powerfully struck it past Matt Turner to level the score in the 10th minute.
With Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Edward Norton among the spectators, the game grew increasingly heated, almost resembling a 'fight club' as the Turkish bench protested a foul by the tenacious Sebastian Berhalter, who received a yellow card. The Americans believed they had regained the lead when McKenzie, the second US center-back to score, found the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
In the 31st minute, the US found themselves trailing for the first time in this World Cup. Guler identified Eren Elmali’s overlapping run, passed him the ball, and Elmali then cut it back from the left byline to Yilmaz, who steered it beyond the goalkeeper. The half-time interval proved beneficial for the US. In the 49th minute, they equalized again from a long throw-in by McKenzie. Turkey’s clearance only reached Berhalter, who impressively smashed his shot low into the bottom corner. The crowd erupted once more just before the hour mark as Pochettino introduced Christian Pulisic, widely considered the biggest star in US soccer. Nicknamed "Captain America," Pulisic was greeted with chants of "USA," making his return after aggravating an injury against Paraguay two weeks prior. Pulisic immediately showed his prowess, twice having shots blocked from close range following incisive runs from the left, and also saw a ball loop off his shin onto the post. However, Turkey began to press again, and deep into stoppage time, Ayhan dashed US hopes, firing the ball home from close range. The Turkish team celebrated wildly, while American players gathered in a huddle after the final whistle, determined not to let the late blow overshadow their campaign, which had started so promisingly. Pochettino reiterated his stance, saying, "If we (had won) the game, is it going to change my mood, my momentum? No. Winning this game, or not winning this game, it’s not going to change."
