Serena Williams Makes Triumphant Return to Tennis

The tennis world witnessed a remarkable comeback as Serena Williams, the 44-year-old legendary tennis player, made her first appearance on the court since the 2022 US Open. Williams, partnering with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, secured a 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 victory over the third-seeded duo, Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe. As she stepped onto the grass court at the Andy Murray Arena, Williams was greeted with a standing ovation, marking her debut at the Queen's Club. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion put up an impressive display, showcasing her skills alongside her new partner. In a post-match interview, Williams expressed her excitement about playing with Mboko, stating, 'I had so much fun playing with Vicky [Mboko]. She really was able to hold up the team and play big on the big points - I could really rely on her. We've never played together, but it just felt so natural playing with her, so it was a lot of fun.' When asked about her decision to make a comeback at Queen's, Williams joked, 'I had nothing better to do - I got tired of sitting at home! My kids are out of school for the summer, so why not?!' Williams had previously mentioned that she was 'evolving' away from tennis rather than retiring outright in 2022. The 14-time Grand Slam doubles champion is set to compete in doubles at the Berlin Open in Germany next week, although her participation in Wimbledon, starting June 29, remains uncertain. The unseeded pair will now face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the quarter-finals, after the latter defeated Alexandra Panova and Demi Schuurs 6-2 2-6 11-9.
