Delta Train Derailment Claims Four Lives, Including Infant, Says Federal Ministry of Transportation

In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, a train carrying 482 people derailed in Agbor, Delta State, resulting in the loss of four lives. According to a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Transportation on Tuesday, June 8, the ill-fated train had 442 passengers on board, in addition to 40 crew members, security personnel, and third-party service providers. The ministry's Permanent Secretary, Funsho Adebiyi, disclosed that preliminary reports indicate that four coaches capsized, while one coach derailed, leading to the unfortunate loss of four lives - two adult females, one adult male, and an infant passenger. Rescue and evacuation efforts were completed by 6:30 pm, with those injured being transported to medical facilities in Agbor for care. A total of 24 people suffered serious injuries, while several others sustained less severe wounds. Notably, one NRC staff member suffered a traumatic limb injury and is currently receiving treatment, with their condition reported to be stable. Among the passengers on board were prominent figures, including Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central, and Patrick Ukah, a former Secretary to the Delta State Government. The ministry and the NRC have offered their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for the quick recovery of all those injured. A full investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced, with authorities working to account for every passenger and offer support to those affected. The full onboard manifest has been retrieved and will be made available upon request by the relevant authorities. Efforts are ongoing to identify all the injured and deceased persons for proper documentation.
