Authorities within the Nigerian Army have verified an incident involving an attempted unauthorized entry into their official X platform, previously known as Twitter. They have stated that prompt actions have been initiated to safeguard the account and avert any subsequent breaches. This event, which the Army is classifying as a cybersecurity breach, took place around 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

A statement issued on Saturday by Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, indicated that technical and protective protocols are now active to protect the account and ensure the reliability of public information. According to the statement, the Army's efforts are focused on “fully securing the affected account and restoring exclusive administrative control.”

The military body also cautioned both the general public and media outlets to be wary and dismiss any content that appears suspicious, unauthorized, misleading, or unverified emanating from the compromised account. The statement explicitly clarified, “Such content does not represent the official position of the Nigerian Army.”

As investigations and resolution efforts proceed, the Army advised the public and media to confirm any information via its alternative official communication channels. These alternative channels include Facebook pages @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo; Instagram profiles @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo; the X account @nigerianarmyinfo; and YouTube channels @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfotv.

Reiterating its dedication to information integrity, operational security, and responsible strategic communication, the Army extended its gratitude to the public for their alertness and cooperation. Further updates will be shared as they become available, the Army added.
