Major General Bemgba Koughna, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, recently undertook a visit to Kebbe Local Government Area in Sokoto State. The purpose of his visit was to evaluate the prevailing security landscape, which has been impacted by fresh threats reportedly emanating from the Lakurawa terrorist group.

This visit was officially confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8 Division and Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA. General Koughna conducted a thorough operational assessment of the Forward Operating Base in Kebbe, along with neighboring communities, following reports of a recent assault on Ungushi community within the area. This assessment comes amidst heightened security anxieties along the border between Sokoto and Kebbi states, where residents have reportedly abandoned their homes in several affected communities due to attacks and incidents of livestock rustling.

During his time in Kebbe, the GOC engaged with local leaders and residents, carefully listening to their concerns and reviewing the overall security situation. General Koughna gave assurances to the inhabitants that the Nigerian Army has reconfigured its security arrangements to prevent further incursions by terrorists and to safeguard vulnerable communities.

He stated, “Troops remain fully deployed, highly alert and operationally focused on protecting lives and property.” He further explained that the Army has implemented measures to ensure that developing threats are swiftly identified and contained before they can escalate. Koughna reiterated, “The Nigerian Army remains unwavering in its determination to respond swiftly and decisively to any emerging threats.” The GOC also promised the residents that terrorist elements would not be permitted to establish safe havens within Kebbe and its environs.

“We will continue to maintain a robust presence in this area and ensure that our troops remain ready to respond to any threat to the peace and security of the people,” he affirmed. Koughna urged the residents to remain calm, assuring them that security forces were firmly present and actively working to restore confidence in the affected communities. He advised, “I urge you to remain calm and continue with your lawful activities. Your security remains our priority, and we will continue to do everything within our mandate to protect you.”

However, the GOC emphasized the necessity for enhanced collaboration between the military and local communities, particularly through the prompt sharing of credible intelligence. He highlighted, “Community support remains a critical component in detecting, disrupting and dismantling terrorist networks before they can launch attacks.” Koughna implored community leaders and residents to report any suspicious movements, unfamiliar individuals, or activities that could pose a security risk. He underscored that effective intelligence-sharing between citizens and security agencies is crucial for preventing attacks and denying criminal and terrorist groups freedom of movement.

The Army chief also reaffirmed the commitment of troops to safeguarding lives, property, and vital infrastructure in Kebbe and other susceptible communities within their operational jurisdiction. He declared, “We will not allow criminal elements to intimidate our people or disrupt their livelihoods. Our troops are prepared and will continue to operate with determination and professionalism.” This operational assessment forms part of ongoing initiatives aimed at bolstering security around Kebbe and other vulnerable areas following recent security incidents.
