The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has formally acknowledged the worries expressed by residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, concerning a foul smell and potential ecological damage in the wake of a recent plane crash in their vicinity. Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Director of Public Relations and Information, released a statement on Thursday, affirming that the NAF is aware of the distress caused by the situation.

“The NAF acknowledges the concerns expressed by residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, particularly reports of an offensive odour and fears of possible environmental impact following the aircraft accident,” Ejodame stated. He further added, “The NAF recognises the discomfort, anxiety and uncertainty such circumstances may cause and assures the affected community that their concerns are being taken seriously.”

Ejodame confirmed that search and recovery operations are still actively underway. He elaborated that the NAF is collaborating closely with relevant partner agencies to ensure the safe and systematic retrieval of the aircraft wreckage. This ongoing effort follows previous reports of the National Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and Navy divers continuing underwater searches, the recovery of additional aircraft components, and the NAF chief's directive for stricter flight safety checks.

Upon the conclusion of the recovery phase, Ejodame indicated that the NAF would engage with appropriate environmental and public health authorities, alongside other pertinent bodies. This engagement aims to thoroughly assess the situation and coordinate necessary actions to mitigate any identified environmental issues. The Air Force reiterated its dedication to the welfare of the affected community.

Ejodame concluded by stating, “The NAF remains concerned about the wellbeing of the affected community and is committed to constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure that appropriate measures are taken in the interest of public health, safety and environmental wellbeing.” The ill-fated ATR-42 aircraft, designated NAF 931, met its tragic end in a swampy area of Igbokoda on October 5, 2026. The plane was on a routine flight path from Benin City to Lagos when it crashed, resulting in the loss of all 25 individuals on board, comprising five crew members and twenty passengers.
