NYSC Osun Allays Fears: Corps Member Adewebi Opeoluwa Is Safe

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Osun State Secretariat has officially confirmed that corps member Adewebi Opeoluwa is safe and sound, following her recent appearance at the Osogbo secretariat on Monday. This crucial update was released by the NYSC in a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Tuesday, designed to counter various social media reports that had suggested the corps member was missing.

The statement, titled “Corps Member Adewebi Meets NYSC Osun State Coordinator,” detailed a meeting between Ms. Adewebi and the State Coordinator, Mr. Ekeng Ita Kubiangha. During this gathering, which also included Assistant Directors, Vice Principals, and some fellow corps members from her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), St. James Grammar School, footage was recorded to substantiate her presence and well-being. The NYSC emphatically stated, “Corps Member, Adewebi Opeoluwa, is safe and well. She was seen on Monday at the NYSC Osun State Secretariat, Osogbo, during a meeting with the State Coordinator, Mr. Ekeng Ita Kubiangha.” They further clarified that the footage served as definitive proof that Ms. Adewebi was “alive, safe and not missing, contrary to reports circulating on social media.”

Previously, social media posts and multiple news outlets had indicated that Adewebi had been missing since September 20, with a missing-person notice widely disseminated online on September 24. However, Adewebi herself has since dispelled these rumours, asserting that she was neither missing nor had she been abducted. In a statement posted by NYSC360 on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday evening, she explained that the alarm was raised by her mother, who had been unable to reach her for several days. This concern was then amplified by various media platforms.

Adewebi's statement read, “I wish to state categorically that I was not missing neither was I kidn*pped. It was because my mother was not able to reach me for some days that warranted her to raise an alarm which was amplified by the media output.” She reassured the public, adding, “I wish to state that I am safe, accounted for and not in any danger.”

She also took the opportunity to apologise for the distress and confusion caused by the reports, clarifying that the initial media report was made in good faith to alleviate her mother's worries. “The initial report was made in good faith by the media output to appease my mother who was so scared of not hearing from me,” Adewebi stated. She concluded with a heartfelt apology: “I sincerely apologise for any alarm, distress or confusion the post may have caused the entire NYSC community in Osun State at large, starting from my state coordinator, my PPA, my friends and colleagues. Once again I am really sorry for all the problems I have put everyone through.”
